Last season’s Nigeria Professional Football League top scorer Godwin Obaje, Akwa United’s Friday Ubong and Niger Tornadoes’ Wilfred Ammeh on Thursday made the final cut for the VAT Wonder Goal award.
According to the League Management Company, the three nominees made the shortlist in a match day that recorded 23 goals.
Obaje switched to IfeanyiUbah from Wikki Tourists after emerging as the highest scorer last season and has so far netted nine times this term but it was his second effort against Kano Pillars that has earned him a chance to contest the best goal of the week honour.
On a day Niger Tornadoes doused the fire from Lagos side MFM, Ammeh made good a miscuing by a teammate, the right-footer showed versatility of both legs when he deftly controlled the mis-kick, pushed twice to displace two markers and position well for a right-footed blaze that hit the upper inner part of the net.
Ubong’s goal is similar to the two other shortlisted goals only to the extent that it shook the top end of the net. But his was a sheer effort in bravery and big heart. A stubborn ABS backline had on two occasions repelled moves by Akwa United through the left side and on the third time, the ball fell to Ubong who caressed with his left foot to release a rocket that sailed upwards into the net from 30 metres.
The winner will receive N150, 000 half of which he is expected to contribute to a charity of his choice within the city where the club is based.
