WARRI—GRIEVING Anionwu family in Warri, Delta State, has expressed shock and anger over Police report on their son, Emeka Anionwu, 27, who was found dead with gunshot wounds metres away from the gates of his fiancée’s residence.
Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, CSP Andrew Aniamaka, in a situation report, told Vanguard that “three robbers, ostensibly about to commit their act, were resisted by Emeka Anionwu, who was then shot dead.
“That is the much we know for now, but we are investigating to bring these robbers to book. We are already working on it. Immediately we got wind of the attack, our men, led by a Superintendent of Police, moved in but unfortunately they had left.
“We could only convey the corpse to the mortuary and took inventory of their expended cartridges.”
‘No robber killed my brother’
However, reacting to the Police report, elder sister to the deceased, Linian Anionwu, said: “No robber killed my brother. He was murdered. The Police have a duty to find out by who.
“My brother and his fiancée have been in a relationship for the past two years and her parents, just like ours, are aware of the relationship. Whether her father approves of the affair is not the issue here.
“On August 28, the girl came to our Edjeba home to meet Emeka, who just returned from work offshore. They left at about 5p.m. to Enerhen, her dad’s home.
“They were supposed to return to Edejeba, but they apparently stayed back on the girl’s insistence that the parents, who travelled may not return till the day after.
“When her father visited the Enerhen Police Station the next day, he first labelled my brother, in his first statement, as a member of the robbery gang, who attacked his home and got killed.
“He never mentioned that my brother was guest to her daughter and they both slept in the house in company of her brother.
“The DPO was shocked after hearing my account and that of the girlfriend. In my presence, the DPO called the IPO to ask the girl’s father to change his statement on caution, saying the matter was not of robbery but of suspected murder.
“The girl and her father know how and why my brother had to die. They need to be questioned.”
Similarly, late Emeka’s aunt, Jane Anionwu, said: “We have been summoned once by Delta State Commissioner of Police, a couple of days after my nephew died. I told him the girlfriend has a case to answer. We are expected back at Asaba Tuesday (today) or Wednesday (tomorrow).
“Her father claimed he was not home when he raised the alarm of robbery at his residence at about 3.30a.m.
“The Police, who went there, saw the place under lock and key, but my brother who was supposed to be in with his girlfriend and her brother was the one killed by the robbers outside their gate? That story is too true to be believed.”
Contacted, the girlfriend’s father said the matter was already before the Police and it was best to allow the Police do their job.
