A group, Association of Real Estate Developers of Lagos State, has warned developers in the state against renovating inhabited buildings.
The Chairman of the group, Mr. Nureni Akinsanya, in a statement on Thursday said the Lagos State Physical Planning Law frowned on such act, adding that it had claimed many lives in the state.
Akinsanya spoke in reaction to the death of two persons in a collapsed building on Daddy Alaja Street, Lagos Island, on Monday.
The chairman noted that the association had overhauled its monitoring team to ensure compliance, saying violators would be made to face the law.
Akinsanya said the recent building collapse on the Lagos Island had been marked as distressed for almost two years.
“The developer could not do anything due to some challenges he faced, ranging from non-cooperative attitude of building owner and stubborn tenants, among others. Before anyone knew what was going on, an estate agent took advantage of the situation to dupe unsuspecting would-be tenants by collecting money from them and started renovating the said building,” the statement said.
