The founder, Government High School, Ilorin, Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulganiyu Abdul-Razaq, has said that policy somersault and lack of political will are the biggest challenges facing the education sector.
He, therefore, urged government to ensure that policies match the vision of development for the society.
Abdul-Razaq, who was also the first principal of the school, said this on Wednesday during its 50th anniversary, which also coincided with the golden jubilee anniversary of the state.
The educationist commended many of his former pupils for bringing glory to the school through their achievements.
Speaking at the occasion, a former Commissioner of Education and Human Capital in Kwara, Alhaji Raji Afolagbe, said the school had contributed greatly to the educational advancement of the North Central and Ilorin in particular.
Afolagbe, who is also the National President of the ICI/GHS Old Students Association, said the founder provided an unparalleled opportunity for many people to have access to quality post-primary education with the establishment of the college in 1967.
“He is a man of big vision. He sponsored many pupils despite the fact that he established the school. In fact, he approached some of his friends to give out scholarships. He even had some companies he approached for scholarship. All you knew was that Baba had got a scholarship for you and you didn’t know how,’’ he said.
Also speaking at the event, a former Attorney General of Kwara State and former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Saka Isau, SAN, said the foresight of the founder was unparalleled.
