Five ways to curb social media addiction.

IF you had any doubts as to whether or not you are a social media addict, last week’s article, ‘Six signs that you’re a social media addict’ must have set you on the right track. The next step however is overcoming your addiction. Here’s how:
Admit that you’re an addict
The first step to overcoming addiction is to stop living in denial. You need to admit that you spend more time and share more information online than you are supposed to. Once you do that, you’ll be in a much better position to overcome your addiction.
Stick to the time table
Watch your time. Don’t go online without having a stipulated timeline before hand. In fact, let your device work as your alarm clock and if possible, set the device to go off at the stipulated time. Instead of treating yourself to social media access for a long stretch, settle for a few minutes per time about three times a day.
Limit access
Reduce your monthly data budget. That way, you reduce access to the internet. Also reduce the number of devices that can access the internet.
Learn the art of ‘fasting’
You don’t have to stay offline for a year, but you can try it for a weekend. Focus on spending time with family and friends. Read a book, visit a loved one…you’ll be surprised at how fulfilling your life can be even when your offline.
Limit real time messaging
It’s not entirely your fault that you’re an online addict. Your contacts are also to blame for expecting replies to their messages as soon as they click send. Let your friends know that to get immediate feedback, they should call or text.
